Welcome to the Alliance for Open Media

Founded in 2015, AOMedia is a collaborative effort to develop open standards and software under a royalty-free patent policy and permissive copyright license – bringing next-generation media experiences to more people, faster.

Our members are innovators from across the media ecosystem and include some of the world’s largest patent holders. They stream content, operate social media networks, run video conferencing services, make chips, build consumer electronics devices, design computer hardware, license software, offer services and do research.

Work within AOMedia is organized into Working Groups, each with a defined scope and deliverables. For example, the Codec Working Group is tasked with developing and managing the current AV1 and next-generation video coding standard.

AV1, which was designed from the get-go for video on the web, was the initial project of AOMedia and was published in 2018. The developers of AOMedia have made AV1 available under Open Media Patent License 1.0. Work has since expanded to include a modern image format (AVIF); immersive sound, starting with IAMF; and volumetric media for high-quality 3D graphics.

Join us today if you are interested in being at the epicenter of open innovation for media and entertainment! AOMedia welcomes companies, government agencies, and universities — large and small. This is an opportunity to directly influence future standards as well as network with peers.

AOMedia is organized as a project of the Linux Foundation.
