What first brought you to AOMedia, and why did you decide to become a member?
AOMedia provides a new video standard business model. It will make it easy to popularize the AV1 standard and fosters the development of a rich and comprehensive ecosystem.
iQIYI joined AOMedia, hoping to jointly promote the application of AV1 technology. With the continuous adoption of 5G technology, 4K, and even 8K ULTRA HD becoming popular among consumers, the application of the AV1 format will help them to better enjoy HD and ULTRA HD content.
What are you currently working on with regard to AV1? How will end-users benefit from your work? Businesses? Markets?
To further improve this new streaming format's efficiency, iQIYI has developed QAV1, a proprietary AV1 standard-based encoder that significantly reduces computing complexity, avoids prolonged encoding time, and enhances AV1's application efficiency.
Compared with the current mainstream video compression standards, AV1 boasts the significant advantage of transmitting higher quality video content with less data. In comparison, users require 20% less streaming data when using AV1 for the same video quality. When using a bandwidth equivalent to the current codec, AV1 delivers superior high-definition streaming.
What AOMedia efforts are you most excited about?
The AV1 decoder is supported in modern versions of the Chrome web browser, so the format should be the first choice for the web platform. The AV1 patent policy is also very friendly for manufacturers to apply this standard.
