Our Software Implementation Working Group (SIWG) is pleased to share the recent release of SVT-AV1 v2.3, an update to the AOM project that provides an AV1-compliant open-source encoder library. Scalable Video Technology (SVT) refers to the ability of an encoder to scale its performance according to the compute capabilities of the platform on which it is running, essentially allowing it to use the maximum amount of allocated resources to achieve the highest possible video quality

Why is this release important?

SVT-AV1 v2.3 is a regular cadence release of the project but boasts some significant updates since SVT-AV1 v2.0, which was shared earlier this year.

Compared to v2.0, the v2.3 update includes the following:

  • Improved quality vs. speed tradeoffs across all presets. E.g. ~20-40% speedup at similar quality levels for presets 7 down to 0.
  • More Arm optimizations bringing the speedup of Arm-optimized code to 6x vs. the C code.
  • Most importantly, a new fast-decode encoding mode that allows for faster AV1 software decoding on mobile devices, reaching decoding speed levels that are within 10% of those of the software VP9 decoder.

The release of STV-AV1 v2.3 was shared at the AOMedia Industry Workshop held at ICIP 2024 in Abu Dhabi in October and ties into AOMedia’s strategy to help expand AV1 coverage and support on devices.

Where can you find it?

The SVT-AV1 release can be found on the project GitLab. Please give it a try and provide feedback to help us make the next version even better. Detailed user manuals, technical documentation, and a list of publications can be found here.

Thank you to all the members of the Software Implementation Working Group for their ongoing contributions. Your hard work makes these updates possible.
