AOMedia Updates from ICIP 2024 blog header

During a half-day industry workshop at ICIP 2024 in Abu Dhabi, presenters from AOMedia members Google, Meta, Apple and Tencent shared the latest on the AOM next generation video coding standard and provided status updates from AOMedia working groups and subgroups. The team also shared production use cases from Meta and Google and talked through some challenges and innovations that came from that work. The session was kindly sponsored by Google and Meta.

The first segment of the program focused on AOMedia, beginning with an introduction to the group, an overview of activities and an explanation of membership benefits. From there, presenters shared the following updates:

  • AVM Coding Tool Update: Representatives from Google, Apple and Tencent discussed the next gen AOM Video Codec (AVM), development and progress made since 2020 and its current status. They also gave an extensive tools overview, details of which can be found in these slides.
  • AVM Test Result Update: Dr. Ryan Lei of Meta shared an update on AOM testing subgroup activities, during which he talked through AVM CTC encoding configurations, AVM v8.0 test results and AVM subjective testing results. Full slides can be found here.
  • VM Hardware (HW) Subgroup Activity Update: During this session, Dr. In Suk Chong of Google gave background on HW sub group activities, its mission and mandates. The presentation then turned to a tools analysis. The group reviewed 17 design/analysis documents and 35 tools were provided with recommended changes. Get more details here.
  • Software Implementation Group Update: For this update, Hassene Tmar of Meta and Faouzi Kossentini of VLITT, a new AOMedia member , shared the latest from the Software Implementation Working Group (SIWG). They discussed the SIWG’s mission as well as recent development focus areas and performance updates for SVT-AV1. They also shared thoughts on further expanding AV1 coverage and future focus areas.   • VVM and Audio Working Group Update: In the final AOMedia update session of the morning, a team of AOMedia working group chairs shared the latest from the Audio Codec Working Group (ACWG) and the Volumetric Visual Media (VVM) working group. The team shared recent progress and use cases as well as current and future plans for both groups. Learn more here.
